If you are the type of person who simply cannot buy something someone else has owned before you, it is important to try to maximize the quality of the saddle you are buying.  First you should decide upon a budget for your saddle.  In all honesty, although you can find cheaper saddles out there, you really cannot buy a decent saddle for less than $500.  Some people claim that the cost of a decent saddle is around $1,000.  While this can seem steep, it is important to have a decent quality saddle for the health and happiness of the horse.

Then you need to do your homework.  Just because a particular saddle company has a great reputation doesn’t mean the individual saddle you are looking at is the best saddle you can buy.  There is a significant variation in quality even between saddles offered by the same company.

By buying a new saddle, you will likely get a warrantee.  Also, a new saddle will not have been shaped to a previous horse and rider, so you will get to break it in yourself.

If money were not option we would strongly suggest that you buy a custom made saddle at a top saddle maker.  Realistically though, most of us simply cannot afford that luxury.  A better way to get your hands on this level of quality is to buy used.  Buying a good quality used western saddle isn’t like buying a used car.  Quality saddles are made to last a lifetime.  There is a fairly robust market for used saddles.  Some older saddles are actually more expensive than their newer models.  This is because saddles are a long-lived product and can easily last 50 years or more if they have been manufactured well.

While some people argue that a used saddle will come with scuffs and will have suffered wear from the previous owner, we feel that the cost savings are well worth it.  After all, your saddle won’t be looking new for very long anyway.

If you are buying a used saddle, you need to inspect the saddle carefully making note of the maker’s mark. This can be almost anywhere on the saddle, often it can be found on the fender.  It is important to be able to see this mark clearly.  If you are buying online, make sure the seller provides close up photos.  You will also want to inspect the tree, and have clear photos of any saddle defects (scuffs, tears, other wear).
