How to Buy Used Western Saddles

Are you in the market for used western saddles?  If you’re like most people, the price of a new saddle may be a bit prohibitive.  However, buying used can help take the sting out of your purchase.  Your initial thought may be that buying anything used is not the best choice.  There is often the perception that new is better, but this is not true in the case of saddles.  Since a quality saddle is made to last a lifetime, purchasing one that has been previously-owned can result in substantial savings to you.

There are a few things you need to be aware of before purchasing any used western saddles.  You will want to know exactly what you are getting in your purchase.  Some sellers will include the entire kit and caboodle, while others will not.  So ask if the sale includes the stirrups, cinches, billets, latigos, etc.

Next you will want to ask about any defects or blemishes.  Over time, any used item will show some wear.  But quality saddles hold their value over time, and because of this they are usually well taken care of.  Still you will probably be getting an item with a scuff, stain, or even a tear.  Make sure to ask the seller to send you clear pictures if you can’t see the actual saddle itself.  Don’t forget to ask detailed questions about the peripheral items included as well.

You will also want to verify the brand.  Most saddle makers include a stamp or mark on the stirrup fender.  Look at this carefully to make sure you are getting what is advertised.  If you are looking to buy used western saddles over the internet, ask the seller to send you close up photographs of the mark.

Another thing to ask about is the age and quality of the saddle.  It’s not like buying a bottle of wine where you will find a certain vintage that is markedly better than others, but you want to make sure that you know what you are buying.  All things being equal you will want to buy a saddle that has been slightly, rather than buying heavily used western saddles.

Shipping charges can also vary greatly from seller to seller, especially in the used market as you are likely to be buying from individuals, so make sure to understand what you will be charged for shipping.  Saddles are heavy items, and shipping costs can add greatly to your total purchase price.

Make sure to understand the size of the saddle.  It needs to fit both you and your horse.  Different saddles are better for different sizes of horse.  You can find guidelines for certain breeds if you are unsure of what might suit your horse best.  The seller may be able to help you here.  You can ask them for information about the type of horse for which they have used this particular saddle.

Finally, as with any purchase, decide what your budget is for used western saddles.  Buying used means you can get a better quality saddle for the same price as a lesser quality, newer one.
