The design places the rider more directly over the horse’s center of gravity.  Usually stirrup placement is further forward to facilitate a quick dismount at a fast speed.

Roping Saddles:  The most distinguishing feature of a roping saddle is it’s thick horn.  The horn that you see on most western saddles is utilized in the roping saddle when the cowboy or ranch hand ropes cattle and secures that line to the horn.  Roping saddles usually have a low cantle and a slick for to facilitate a speedy dismount.  They also tend to be quite heavy and sturdily made.  Often roping saddles will include flank cinches which are designed to help keep the saddle from tipping back when a rope is tied to the horn.

Cutting Saddles:  Cutting saddles are designed to allow the rider to remain securely seated during sharp turns and quick stops.  Their main feature is a deep seat with wide swells.
